Groton Is Where the Trucks Load in the Morning
We cover Groton Center along Main Street between Old Ayer Road and West Street, the side streets off Court Street, School Street and Hollis Street, West Groton on West Main Street and Pepperell Road, and the houses around Lost Lake.
Groton wears its age along one street. Main Street through the center runs Federal houses almost end to end, with Colonial survivors in among them and Greek Revival and Victorian work added later, and the giveaway on the Federal ones is the entry: a fanlight, sidelights, pilasters and a classical surround built out of thin members that lose their edges under enough coats. Taking that back down is careful hand work rather than a machine job, and a coating from before 1978 gets a lead question at the start instead of partway through. The window sash tells the same story, small panes and slender muntins where a loaded brush fills the reveal and the glass line stops reading straight. Behind the plaster is wood lath that has flexed through more winters of dry heat than the plaster was built to take. Off the center the picture changes. West Groton is mill cottages and modest Victorians on smaller lots near the Squannacook, and the back roads hold farmhouses, barns, capes and newer subdivision colonials with drywall and engineered trim. What they all share is stone: walls, foundations and steps that frost pulls a little further out of line every spring.
Commercial Groton does not look like a commercial strip, and that changes the work. A good share of the businesses in the center sit inside buildings put up as houses, so a dentist, a law office, an insurance agent or a small shop is operating behind original sash, wide casings and a floor that was never meant to carry a waiting room. The old brick store on Main Street and the town buildings around it are the exceptions. Out at the Four Corners on Boston Road the buildings are newer and easier to work in, and in West Groton the old factory buildings have been given other uses entirely. Then there are the boarding school campuses, the churches and the town offices, all of them moving on fixed calendars: a summer, a vacation week, a Friday evening. What is different here is where the day starts. The crew loads in this town, so a second gallon, a missing length of casing or a compressor that quit is a short run rather than a lost morning, and nobody has to weigh whether one small punch item is worth the trip back.
