From Bradford Colonials to Haverhill Shoe Lofts
Routes run through Bradford on the south bank, up Main Street and Water Street into downtown, across the Washington Street shoe district, out along River Street and Broadway, and into the neighborhoods on Mount Washington and the Highlands.
Haverhill is built on hills, and that matters more than it sounds. On Mount Washington and through the Highlands the houses sit stepped into a grade, which means retaining walls, granite curbing and stair runs that have been fighting frost for a very long time. A wall that has bellied out and a tread that now pitches back toward the house are the same problem underneath: water got behind the stone and froze there. On top of those hills sit the Victorians and large colonials that shoe money paid for, with bracketed cornices, bay windows, porch columns and a hundred feet of trim per elevation. Painting one is mostly ladder time and preparation, not gallons. Closer to the river the stock gets denser, with two families, three deckers and small workers' houses on tight lots. Those have plaster that cracks in the same places every year, wide casings that only look right brushed, and old hardwood the winter treatment turns hazy. Anything coated before 1978 gets asked about before a sander touches it, on every one of these streets.
Downtown Haverhill has been turning shoe factories into apartments, offices and studios for years, and those buildings come with their own rules. Heavy timber and brick, tall windows, one freight elevator and a loading area shared with everybody else in the building, so a repaint gets booked into a slot instead of started whenever a crew arrives. Common corridors and stairwells in a converted mill get painted at night, because people live there and the halls cannot be blocked at six in the evening. Restaurants and bars on Washington Street and Wingate Street run late, so kitchen degreasing starts after the last cover and finishes before the morning delivery. Storefront glass and entry floors get done before opening. Offices go after hours. Over in Bradford the work is smaller and earlier: shops, a practice, a church hall, a school building. General contractors renovating a floor in a mill call us for the post construction passes, and the fine clean waits until their trades are genuinely finished instead of nearly finished.

Square footage over the phone is a guess, and on a wall it is worse than a guess, because the failure depth only shows when you put a hand on the joint. You get the scope written out area by area and one number for the job, usually the same business day.
