Vermont Work Is Planned Around the Road In

Vermont work takes us up the Connecticut River towns from Brattleboro, across Windsor and Windham counties, into the Green Mountains near Stowe, Killington, Sugarbush and Okemo, and on to Rutland and the Champlain Valley around Burlington.

Everything here is spread out, and that sits underneath every other fact about the work. The stock is farmhouses and capes on dirt roads, barns and outbuildings put up to be used rather than looked at, slate roofs and slate steps out of the quarries near the New York line, fieldstone foundations and stone walls running off into the trees, and condominium blocks in the Green Mountains that fill and empty with the ski calendar. Winter is the longest of the six states, which makes outdoor work here a planning problem rather than a calendar problem. Mortar has to go in and set while the wall and the ground are both willing to let it, and exterior paint needs a run of dry days the calendar up here hands out sparingly. Then there is getting to the building at all. A long dirt drive during the spring thaw will not carry a loaded truck, and a camp or a hillside house at the end of one decides its own start date no matter what anybody would prefer. We read the road during the visit alongside the building, because the approach is part of the scope in this state.

A block of days goes on the calendar, planned around the weather and the road instead of around convenience. There is no swinging by here, and pretending otherwise would only waste an owner's time. The visit happens with the job already booked, so the trip does the work rather than only measuring it, and nobody is told to expect a truck tomorrow. What that buys is a property finished once. The stonework, the floors, the painting and the cleaning are one company's responsibility, sequenced so that the barn foundation and the interior plaster are not being worked at the same hour by people who have never met each other. A written scope and a fixed number land before the first day, and both hold. On a property up here that usually means the whole list goes on one trip: point the chimney, refinish the pine boards, repaint the rooms that need it, then clean from the top of the house down. Multi week work is the work that makes the mileage sensible. Recurring house cleaning does not, so that side of the business stays where the schedule is dependable.

How a Vermont job gets scheduled

Everything starts with somebody standing in the actual place. We are based in Groton, Massachusetts, so work close to home runs on a weekly route and a same week window. Further out the job is held as a block of days on the calendar and the walkthrough is booked with it, not on demand. You hear which one your property is before you commit to anything, and either way the scope and the number come to you in writing first.

What we work on

Houses and buildings, in every sector

What we take in Vermont is the same list we take at home in Groton. Property type does not narrow it, and neither does sector.

Residential

Single family houses, condos and townhouses, two and three family buildings, apartment blocks and the units inside them, rentals between tenants, new construction at handover, and second homes.

Commercial, industrial and institutional

Offices and medical suites, retail stores and restaurants, schools, daycares and places of worship, gyms, salons and clinics, warehouses, plants and light industrial space, banks and professional offices, municipal and community buildings, plus the property managers and general contractors who hold several of these at once.

Work in Vermont, quoted in writing.

We look at the property, agree what happens and in what order, and send the number in writing. If the distance changes what we can promise, you hear that first.
